A video of a burqa-clad woman repeatedly slapping a man in public is going viral on social media with the claim that the man seen in the video is a Hindu. The man can be heard pleading for forgiveness and promising that he won't repeat his actions. Meanwhile, in the video, an onlooker can be heard commenting that this man harasses women on a daily basis. The viral video has the location, Becon Ganj, Kanpur, mentioned on it.
Verified X user Rizwan Haider (@ItsRizwanHaider) shared the video on X with a caption that described the man as a 'नफरती अंधभक्त', suggesting he was a Hindu. (Archived link)

So did X user Karishma Aziz (@Karishma_voice), who later deleted the tweet. In their X bio, Karishma Aziz claims to be a journalist fighting against Islamophobia and fake news.

Looking for more details about the incident, Alt News found a statement by the Kanpur Nagar police commissionerate on X. Addressing the issue, they wrote, "A video going viral on social media in which a man is being beaten up by a woman alleging molestation, is of 25.02.2025, cognizance was taken by the local police, the name of the person seen in the video is Adnan, son of late Abdul Mabud, resident of Bajaria police station area. The family members of the accused were spoken to, who said that Adnan's mental condition was not normal. He is undergoing treatment. The accused has been caught by police."
The tweet contained a video statement by the assistant police commissioner of Anwarganj, who made the same points.
Taking a cue from this, we performed keyword searches and found news reports on the incident in Hindustan Times and the Free Press Journal, among other media outlets.
According to these reports, the incident took place in the Becon Ganj market area where the woman had gone shopping. A young man reportedly started following her making vulgar comments. Initially, she ignored him, but when he continued to harass her, she took matters in her own hands. She grabbed the harasser by his collar and showered several slaps on his face in the middle of the crowded market. The man started to plead for forgiveness and promised not to repeat his actions. The entire incident was captured by an onlooker and the clip later surfaced on social media.
Police took cognizance of the incident and started the investigation. The accused man was identified as Adnan, son of late Abdul Mabud, a resident of Bajaria police station area in Kanpur. He had been arrested. The reports mention that the family of the accused had revealed that Adnan had a history of mental illness and was under treatment.
To sum up, both the accused and the victim in the case are Muslims. The claims made by the social media users the the perpetrator was a Hindu are false. There is no communal angle to this incident.
