(1) घंटी की कीमत, (bell price)

रामदास एक ग्वाले का बेटा था। रोज सुबह वह अपनी गायों को चराने जंगल में ले जाता। हर गाय के गले में एक-एक घंटी बँधी थी। जो गाय सबसे अधिक सुंदर थी उसके गले में घंटी भी अधिक कीमती बँधी थी।
एक दिन एक अजनबी जंगल से गुजर रहा था। वह उस गाय को देखकर रामदास के पास आया, ''यह घंटी बड़ी प्यारी है ! क्या कीमत है इसकी ?''
''बीस रुपये।'' रामदास ने उत्तर दिया।
''बस, सिर्फ बीस रुपये ! मैं तुम्हें इस घंटी के चालीस रुपये दे सकता हूँ।''

सुनकर रामदास प्रसन्न हो उठा। झट से उसने घंटी उतारकर उस अजनबी के हाथ में थमा दी और पैसे अपनी जेब में रख लिये। अब गाय के गले में कोई घंटी नहीं थी। घंटी की टुनक से उसे अन्दाजा हो जाया करता था। अतः अब इसका अन्दाजा लगाना रामदास के लिए मुश्किल हो गया कि गाय इस वक्त कहाँ चर रही है। जब चरते-चरते गाय दूर निकल आई तो अजनबी को मौका मिल गया। वह गाय को अपने साथ लेकर चल पड़ा।
तभी रामदास ने उसे देखा। वह रोता हुआ घर पहुँचा और सारी घटना अपने पिता को सुनाई। उसने कहा, ''मुझे तनिक भी अनुमान नहीं था कि वह अजनबी मुझे घंटी के इतने अच्छे पैसे देकर ठग ले जाएगा।''
पिता ने, ''ठगी का सुख बड़ा खतरनाक होता है। पहले वह हमें प्रसन्नता देता है, फिर दुःख। अतः हमें पहले ही से उसका सुख नहीं उठाना चाहिए।''
लालच से कभी सुख नहीं मिलता।

Ramdas was the son of a cowherd. Every morning he would take his cows to the forest for grazing. A bell was tied around the neck of each cow. The cow which was most beautiful had a bell tied around its neck even more precious.
One day a stranger was passing through the forest. Seeing that cow, he came to Ramdas, "This bell is very sweet! What is its price?"
"Twenty rupees," replied Ramdas.
"Just twenty bucks! I can give you forty rupees for this bell."

Hearing this, Ramdas was pleased. He quickly took off the bell, handed it over to the stranger and kept the money in his pocket. Now there was no bell around the cow's neck. He used to know by the sound of the bell. So now it became difficult for Ramdas to guess where the cow is grazing at this time. When the cow came out grazing, the stranger got a chance. He took the cow with him and left.
Then Ramdas saw her. He reached home crying and narrated the whole incident to his father. He said, "I had no idea that the stranger would cheat me by giving me so much money for the bell."
The father said, "The pleasure of cheating is very dangerous. First he gives us happiness, then sorrows. So we should not take pleasure in it in advance."
Greed never brings happiness.

(2) सच्ची सेवा, (true service)

एक थी बिल्ली। मुरगी के बच्चे उसे बहुत ही भाते थे। रोजाना दो-चार बच्चों को वह कहीं-न-कहीं से खोज-खाजकर खा जाती थी। एक दिन उसे भनक मिली कि एक मुरगी बीमार है। वह हमदर्दी जताने मुरगी के दरबे के पास आई और कहा, ''कहो बहन, कैसी हो ? क्या मैं तुम्हारी ऐसी हालत में तुम्हारे कुछ काम आ सकती हूँ ? तुम्हारी सेवा करना मेरा फर्ज भी तो है।''
बीमार मुरगी क्षण भर सोचती रही। फिर बोली, ''अगर तुम सचमुच मेरी सेवा करना चाहती हो तो मेरे परिवार से दूर रहो---और अपनी जमातवालों से भी ऐसा ही करने को कहो।''
दुश्मन की शुभकामनाओं पर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए।

(3) ज्ञान की प्यास, (thirst for knowledge)

उन दिनों महादेव गोविंद रानडे हाई कोर्ट के जज थे। उन्हें भाषाएँ सीखने का बड़ा शौक था। अपने इस शौक के कारण उन्होंने अनेक भाषाएँ सीख ली थीं; किंतु बँगला भाषा अभी तक नहीं सीख पाए थे। अंत में उन्हें एक उपाय सूझा। उन्होंने एक बंगाली नाई से हजामत बनवानी शुरू कर दी। नाई जितनी देर तक उनकी हजामत बनाता, वे उससे बँगला भाषा सीखते रहते।
रानडे की पत्नी को यह बुरा लगा। उन्होंने अपने पति से कहा, ''आप हाई कोर्ट के जज होकर एक नाई से भाषा सीखते हैं। कोई देखेगा तो क्या इज्जत रह जाएगी ! आपको बँगला सीखनी ही है तो किसी विद्वान से सीखिए।''
रानडे ने हँसते हुए उत्तर दिया, ''मैं तो ज्ञान का प्यासा हूँ। मुझे जाति-पाँत से क्या लेना-देना ?''
यह उत्तर सुन पत्नी फिर कुछ न बोलीं।
ज्ञान ऊँच-नीच की किसी पिटारी में बंद नहीं रहता।

In those days Mahadev Govind Ranade was a judge of the High Court. He had a great passion for learning languages. Because of this hobby, he had learned many languages; But he had not yet learned the Bengali language. In the end, he came up with a solution. He started shaving from a Bengali barber. (4) कोयल, (Cuckoo)

गरमियों की एक सुबह घनिष्ठ मित्र तोताराम और कल्लू एक जंगल में गए। सहसा उन्हें कोयल की कुहुक सुनाई पड़ी। ''यह एक पक्षी की आवाज है जो किसी मंगल की सूचना देती है।''
अंधविश्वासी तोताराम ने कहा, ''मैंने इसकी आवाज सुबह-सुबह सुनी है। मुझे विश्वास है कि आज का दिन बड़ा भाग्यशाली होगा। अवश्य ही मुझे रुपयों से भरा थैला मिलेगा।''
''नहीं !'' कल्लू ने तोताराम की बात का प्रतिवाद किया, जो उससे भी अधिक वहमी था, ''तुम मुझसे अधिक भाग्यशाली नहीं हो। मुझे विश्वास है, यह आवाज मेरे लिए अधिक भाग्यशाली साबित होगी। तुम देखना, जरूर मुझे अच्छी-खासी रकम प्राप्त होगी।'

खूबसूरत मौसम का मजा लेने के बजाय वे दोनों इसी बात पर लड़ने लगे। तू-तू, मैं-मैं के बाद हाथापाई पर उतारू हो गए। कुछ ही समय में वे बुरी तरह जख्मी हो गए। दोनों डॉक्टर के पास पहुँचे। डॉक्टर ने उनसे पूछा कि वे आखिर इस स्थिति में पहुँचे कैसे ? सारी घटना बयान करने के बाद उन दोनों ने डॉक्टर से पूछा, ''आप बताएँ कि कोयल ने किसके भाग्यशाली होने की सूचना दी थी ?''
डॉक्टर ने हँसते हुए कहा, ''कोयल ने मेरे भाग्यशाली होने की सूचना दी थी। अगर तुम दोनों इसी तरह लड़-झगड़कर हाथ-पैर तोड़ते रहे तो मुझे रुपयों का ढेर तुम्हारे इलाज के एवज में मिलता रहेगा।''
बेकार के झगड़े से दूसरों को फायदा होता है।

One summer morning, close friends Totaram and Kallu went to a forest. Suddenly they heard the cuckoo's cuckoo. "It is the sound of a bird which informs of some auspiciousness."

(5) गरीब विधवा, (poor widow)

विधवा कमला देवी अपनी दो पुत्रियों के साथ बड़ी गरीबी में दिन बिता रही थी। अब तक जो भी जमा-पूँजी उसके पास थी, सब खर्च हो चुकी थी। तिस पर आय का एकमात्र सहारा उसकी गाय भी मर गई। वह बड़ी परेशान थी। आखिर करें क्या ?
''बस, एक ही रास्ता है, अगर भगवान् हमें कहीं से एक गाय दे दे।''
''विश्वास और हिम्मत से काम करो, ईश्वर अवश्य तुम्हारी मदद करेगा।'' उनके पड़ोसी ने उनसे कहा।
''पर हम करें क्या ?'' कमला देवी ने निराशा से भरकर कहा।

''तुम अपनी आमदनी बढ़ाओ। तुम सब बहुत अच्छी कढ़ाई-बुनाई जानती हो। प्रतिदिन तीन-चार घंटा यह काम अतिरिक्त करो, ताकि कुछ ऊपरी आमदनी हो सके। उसे जमा करो। दूसरी बात यह कि अपनी चाय का खर्चा कम कर दो। रोज सुबह दलिया बनाकर उसका पानी पियो, जो स्वास्थ्यवर्धक भी होगा और बचत भरा भी। इस तरह जल्दी ही दूसरी गाय खरीदने के लिए पैसे इकट्ठे हो जाएँगे।''
कमला देवी और उसकी पुत्रियों ने अपने पड़ोसी के सुझाव के मुताबिक काम करना शुरू कर दिया। साल के अंत में उनके पास इतना पैसा इकट्ठा हो गया कि वे एक अच्छी गाय खरीद सके।
मेहनत, बचत और समझदारी आदमी के लिए दूसरा ईश्वर है

एक मंदिर था , उसमें सभी लोग पगार पर काम करते थे । आरती वाला , पूजा कराने वाला आदमी , घंटा बजाने वाला भी पगार पर था । घंटा बजाने वाला आदमी आरती के समय भाव के साथ इतना मसगूल हो जाता था कि होश में ही नहीं रहता था । व्यक्ति पूरे भक्ति भाव से खुद का काम करता था । मंदिर में आने वाले सभी व्यक्ति भगवान के साथ घंटा बजाने वाले व्यक्ति के भाव के भी दर्शन करते थे । उसकी भी वाह - वाह होती थी ।

यह दिन मंदिर का ट्रस्ट बदल गया और नए ट्रस्टी ने ऐसा आदेश जारी किया कि अपने मंदिर में काम करते सब लोग पढ़े लिखे होना जरूरी है । जो पढ़े - लिखे नहीं है , उन्हें निकाल दिया जाएगा । उस घंटा बजाने वाले भाई को ट्रस्टी ने कहा कि तुम्हारी आज तक की पगार ले लो । कल से तुम नौकरी पर मत आना । उस घंटा बजाने वाले व्यक्ति ने कहा साहिब भले में पढ़ा लिखा नहीं हूं , परंतु इस कार्य में मेरा भाव भगवान से जुड़ा हुआ है देखो ।

ट्रस्टी ने • सुन लो तुम पढ़े लिखे नहीं हो , इसलिए तुम्हें रखने में नहीं आएगा । दूसरे दिन मंदिर में नए लोगों को रखने में आया । परंतु आरती में आए लोगों को अब पहले जैसा मजा नहीं आता था । घंटा बजाने वाले व्यक्ति की सभी को कमी महसूस होती थी । कुछ लोग मिलकर घंटा बजाने वाले व्यक्ति घर गए , और विनती करी तुम मंदिर आओ ।

उस भाई ने जवाब दिया- मैं तो आऊंगा तो ट्रस्टी को लगेगा कि मैं नौकरी लेने के लिए आया हूं । इसलिए मैं नहीं आ सकता ।

वहां आए हुए लोगों ने एक उपाय बताया कि , मंदिर बराबर सामने आपके लिए दुकान खोल लेते हैं । वहां आपको बैठना है और आरती के समय घंटा बजाने आ जाना , , फिर कोई नहीं कहेगा तुमको नौकरी की जरूरत है । उस भाई ने मंदिर के सामने दुकान शुरू की और वह इतनी चली की एक दुकान से सात दुकान और सात दुकानों से एक फैक्ट्री खोली और करोड़पति बन गया ।

अब वो आदमी महंगी गाड़ी से घंटा बजाने आता था । समय बीतता गया ये बात पुरानी सी हो गई , मंदिर का टट्रस्टी फिर बदल गया । नए ट्रस्ट को नया मंदिर बनाने के लिए दान की जरूरत थी । मंदिर के नए ट्रस्टी को विचार आया कि सबसे पहले उस फैक्ट्री के मालिक से बात करके देखते हैं । ट्रस्टी मालिक के पास गया । सात लाख का खर्चा है , फैक्ट्री मालिक को बताया । फैक्ट्री के मालिक ने कोई सवाल किये बिना एक खाली चेक ट्रस्टी के हाथ में दे दिया और कहा चैक भर लो , ट्रस्टी ने चेक भरकर उस फैक्ट्री मालिक को वापस दिया । फैक्ट्री मालिक ने चेक को देखा और उस ट्रस्टी को दे दिया । ट्रस्टी ने चेक हाथ में लिया और कहा सिग्नेचर तो बाकी है ।

मालिक ने कहा मझे सिग्नेचर करना नहीं आता है लाओ अंगूठा मार देता हूं वही चलेगा । ये सुनकर ट्रस्टी चौक गया और कहा - साहब तुमने अनपढ़ हो कर भी इतनी तरक्की कि , यदि पढ़े लिखे होते तो कहां होते । तो वह सेठ हंसते हुए बोला - भाई मैं पढ़ा लिखा होता तो बस मंदिर में घंटा बजा रहा होता ।

सारांश :- कार्य कोई भी हो , परिस्थिति कैसे भी हो , हमारी काबिलियत , हमारी भावनाओं पर निर्भर करती है । भावनाएं शुद्ध होगी तो ईश्वर और सुंदर भविष्य पक्का हमारा साथ देंगे बस विश्वास रखिए । अवसर सभी को मिलता है -
