A 15-second video showing a large crowd dancing in the streets to loud music has gone viral on social media. Saffron flags can be seen across the crowd, which appears to be bathed in laser and strobe lights.
The clip was amplified after Hindutva outfits had issued statements such as "Holi shall be played with the blood of Muslims on Eid" in open threats against the Mulsim community in Delhi's Uttam Nagar following the murder of 26-year-old Tarun Kumar on March 4, the day of Holi.
X user Vineeta Singh (@biharigurl) posted the viral clip on March 22, writing that it showed Hindus celebrating Holi in Uttam Nagar. At the time of this article being written, the video has garnered close to 5 lakh views, and has been re-shared more than 5,000 times. (Archive)
Another X user, @indiclogic, posted the clip, with the same claim. (Archive)
The clip is also viral on Facebook and Instagram with the same claim -- that it shows Hindus celebrating Holi on Eid in Uttam Nagar. A user named 'Hindustani', for example, shared it on Facebook, and the post got 77,000 Likes. On Instagram, the video was shared with the same claim by several users -- among them was 'Mostly IND', which claims to be a 'news and media website'. Fact Check
First, we tried to verify if the assembly of people shown in the viral video had been reported on by any reputed news agency. We could not find any report. We learnt that Eid was celebrated amid tight security in Delhi's Uttam Nagar on March 21, following a Delhi High Court order to the police to ensure peace and security.
We then broke down the viral clip into keyframes. A reverse image search on one of these led us to this Instagram reel video, uploaded on September 23, 2024.
We could ascertain that the viral clip is sourced from this video, thus proving it is old.
On inspecting the reel, we found that another user (@amar_sound_raichur) ws tagged in this reel, indicating that the video could be from Raichur, in Karnataka. Moreover, the hashtags associated with the reel denoted that it shows Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

At one stage of this video, we could notice a signboard on the mosque that is directly adjacent to the massive crowd dancing in the street. It says "Osmaniya Masjid", providing us with another cue.

We searched for this mosque, adding the location of Raichur, and came across a street view of this mosque, which corroborates that the viral reel was indeed shot in this location.

A comparison between the signboards corroborates that the viral clip is not from Delhi's Uttam Nagar, but Raichur, in Karnataka.

To sum up, we could conclude that the viral video is from Raichur, Karnataka, and was originally uploaded to Instagram in September 2024. It is being circulated with misleading communal allegations, with the claim that it shows Hindus celebrating Holi on the day of Eid, in Uttam Nagar.
