A 57-second video of India's Chief of Army Staff Upendra Dwivedi is viral on social media. Users are sharing the clip with the claim that Dwivedi "admitted" that India had "betrayed" Iran by sharing the location of an Iranian naval ship with Israel.
The video is circulating amid the ongoing war in West Asia with United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other. On March 4, the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena — which was stationed in the Indian Ocean with around 130 personnel on board after participating in a naval event in Visakhapatnam — was reportedly torpedoed by a US submarine near the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The warship was returning to Iran after taking part in the multinational naval exercise hosted by India.
In the viral video, the COAS says, "We are closely monitoring the situation in Iran. Israel is our close ally. The Iranian naval ship being sunk is indeed unfortunate, but it was done in international waters. As long as the Iranian ship remained in Indian waters, they remained protected, but when they crossed into international waters, as Israeli strategic allies, it was our duty to inform Israel of their exact location as a part of our newer strategic deal. So, you're wrong to assume that Iranian naval ships were destroyed within Indian territory. What Israel does in international waters is their business. We can provide Israel with location or intelligence, but we had no part in the Israeli and US joint torpedo attack. They did their business; it is Iran's war, and India has nothing to do with it. Our focus remains on Pakistan, and Israel will help us achieve that goal. We remain grateful to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for helping us seek permission to import Russian fuel."

Fact Check
We noticed a ticker in the viral clip reading "Raisina Dialogue 2026 × Firstpost."

Using this clue, we ran a keyword search on YouTube and found a video published by Firstpost on March 7 titled "India's Army Chief Speaks on Op Sindoor, Pakistan and Future of Warfare | Raisina Dialogue 2026."
In the 21-minute interview, Upendra Dwivedi is in conversation with Harsh V. Pant about the lessons from Operation Sindoor and the evolving nature of warfare, as noted in the video description. This is the same video that is now viral.
At no point in the interview does Dwivedi mention the US-Israel–Iran conflict or the alleged sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. So, it is evident that the viral clip has been lifted from this interview and edited to create a misleading narrative.

For further verification, we uploaded the viral clip to Hive Moderation, an AI detection tool. The analysis indicated a 99.9% likelihood that the speech in the clip was AI-generated.

Additionally, on March 9, the Press Information Bureau's fact-check wing, PIB Fact Check, posted on X that the viral clip of COAS Dwivedi was a digitally manipulated video.
To sum up, it is clear that the viral clip does not show an actual statement made by the Indian Chief of Army Staff, Upendra Dwivedi. The video is a deepfake.
