TCS Nashik case: TV news’ corporate jihad narrative vs what the 9 FIRs actually state

By Ankita Mahalanobish on 4th May 2026

Out of the nine FIRs registered in connection with the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) BPO case in Nashik, only one names Nida Khan, and only in connection with allegedly hurting religious sentiments. What followed in sections of the media, however, bore little resemblance to this record. A clear gulf of difference exists between what is documented in the FIRs and what was amplified across television news channels after the allegations surfaced last month.

An examination of the FIRs shows that none supports some of the sensational claims broadcast on prime time on India's premier news channels. While only one FIR names Nida Khan and the complaint is limited to objectionable remarks about Hindu deities, several 'star' anchors, including Shiv Aroor, Arnab Goswami, Anjana Om Kashyap and Rahul Shivshankar, portrayed her as the “mastermind” of a so-called “corporate jihad” or “conversion syndicate”, alleging that she was orchestrating the targeting and conversion of Hindu women. These allegations were presented without verifiable sourcing and find no mention in the FIRs which form the basis of the case.

Across channels, this narrative was built on a series of uncorroborated claims: That women were systematically targeted during recruitment, groomed and exploited, and coerced into conversion under threat or blackmail, with complaints allegedly suppressed by Khan in a purported HR role. Additional assertions -- that she instructed employees to wear the hijab or burqa or follow Islamic practices -- were also widely circulated, despite having no basis in the FIRs.

What Exactly do the FIRs State?

A review of the nine FIRs shows that altogether eight individuals are named in them. They are Raza Memon, Tausif Attar, Shahrukh Qureshi, Danish Sheikh, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Ansari, Nida Khan and Ashwini Chainani. Allegations range from intrusive personal questioning to molestation and sexual harassment to hurting religious sentiments. Memon and Tausif are each named in five of the nine FIRs, accused of making repeated unwanted advances towards women colleagues despite resistance. In one instance, Memon allegedly asked a female employee about her menstrual problems. Several complainants also allege that the two made remarks suggesting the superiority of Islam and mocked Hindu deities.

One complainant alleges that he was made to wear a skull cap at Tausif’s home during Ramadan, forced to perform namaz, and fed non-vegetarian food despite being vegetarian.

Operational head Ashwini Chainani is named in several FIRs; in one, she is accused of siding with the accused and failing to act on complaints. Similar allegations of inaction have been made against senior manager Nitin Kapoor. Asif Ansari, named in two FIRs, faces accusations ranging from ogling to more serious allegations of molestation and sexual harassment.

Below is a table of charges mentioned in the nine FIRs:

Instead of presenting an account grounded in the FIRs, significant portions of broadcast coverage appeared to privilege a constructed narrative over documented allegations. One of the complaints names Ashwini Chainani, the operational head, alleging that she dismissed verbal complaints raised by a victim and advised her to “leave” and “not get highlighted.” Despite the seriousness of these allegations, they received limited attention in televised debates.

The focus, instead, remained fixed on Nida Khan, who was repeatedly and incorrectly identified as an HR manager allegedly responsible for suppressing complaints and facilitating both sexual harassment and religious conversion within the TCS BPO in Nashik.

Responding to this, TCS clarified that Khan was a process associate with no leadership role. The clarification directly undermines a central premise of the media narrative that she occupied a position enabling institutional complicity.

This framing of Nida Khan as the mastermind was reinforced in prime-time coverage. What follows is a detailed documentation of reportage by mainstream news channels, examining how these sensational claims were constructed and amplified despite finding no mention in the FIRs that form the basis of the case.

In the gallery below, we have presented the contents of the nine FIRs in a nutshell:

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Below is a detailed account of how mainstream TV news channels and their senior editors distorted key details of this widely discussed case. In several instances, unsubstantiated claims were presented without verification and with no disclosure of sources, reflecting little regard for the veracity of facts. Coverage often veered into sensationalism, amplifying narratives not supported by the FIRs.

    NDTV

During a broadcast, Shiv Aroor stated that his network had “set the agenda” on the story and described its reporting as among the “most sober” on the subject. However, the segment advanced several claims that do not find mention in the FIRs. Aroor referred to a purported “pile of complaints” accumulating with Khan and suggested that her alleged inaction indicated a deeper complicity in an organised network. He further implied that she may have feigned compassion for employees to enable exploitation.

These assertions introduce elements, including managerial authority, control over complaints, and participation in a coordinated system, that are not reflected in the FIRs Alt News reviewed.

Similar allegations were repeated in other bulletins on NDTV -- that as an HR official Nida Khan targeted women from economically weaker backgrounds, cultivated their trust, and then acted as a gatekeeper when complaints of abuse arose. Reporter Vedika Sud described Khan as the “kingpin” of the alleged racket.

    Republic

Arnab Goswami on Republic called the case “Corporate Jihad” where “Islamo-fascist grooming gang inside the TCS Nashik preys on vulnerable non-Muslim Hindu girls, sexually harasses them in an organised way inside TCS. rapes them to convert them to Islam.”

Goswami added, “This is a horrific example of radicalisation gone amok in a big corporate firm as its POSH systems went kaput.” Goswami pushed the narrative of “Love Jihad” in his prime time, “Today the case of Nashik should be taken and analysed and thrown at the people who say Love Jihad is a figment of imagination…”

A ground report by Republic TV reporter Revati Hingwe advanced several claims that went beyond what was documented in the FIRs. Hingwe alleged that one victim was taken by three accused to a resort in Nashik where she was repeatedly gang raped. She further suggested the involvement of “international or external links”.

The report also attributed a central role to Nida Khan, claiming that she aided a “grooming gang” engaged in forcible conversions, and that she instructed female employees in wearing the hijab or burqa and in Islamic practices such as reciting the kalma and offering namaz. Additionally, Hingwe asserted that there were “11 cases of forcible conversions and 9 cases of sexual assault”, with more FIRs likely to be filed.

Goswami stated, “Women are coming forward one after another, saying that they were sexually exploited inside TCS because they are Hindus or non-Muslims. They report that they were forcibly converted, abused for being Hindus, and in some cases, raped because of their religion. Why should we remain silent about this?”

    Aaj Tak

On April 16, Aaj Tak anchor Anjana Om Kashyap devoted an extended monologue to portraying Nida Khan as the “mastermind” of the TCS case, falsely claiming she was the HR manager of the branch.

Throughout the segment, Kashyap made a series of allegations about Khan’s conduct that are not reflected in the FIR naming her. She claimed that Khan was a “protector of the accused” and “predator of Hindu women”. Kashyap further alleged that Khan suppressed complaints by threatening victims with termination and ensured that no complaints were formally registered. She did not cite any source for these claims.

She also accused Khan of recruiting Hindu women from economically weaker backgrounds and colluding with Muslim male employees to “orchestrate schemes to entrap” them. Extending this narrative, Kashyap compared Khan to a “Maulana”, alleging that she pressured Hindu women to adopt Islamic customs, including wearing the hijab, and intimidated them with threats of conversion, all under the fear of losing their jobs.

Kashyap additionally claimed that Khan controlled recruitment and shift scheduling, harassing victims by altering their shifts, rejecting leave requests, and subjecting them to public humiliation. The segment culminated with the assertion that male colleagues referred to Khan as “Daredevil” and “Dabang Ma’am”.

Other anchors on Aaj Tak similarly portrayed Nida Khan as an “HR executive” allegedly colluding with Muslim team leaders and pressuring individuals to “embrace Islam”. During a bulletin, Shasshi Sharma stated that “HR Executive Nida Khan stands accused of exerting pressure on individuals to undergo religious conversion”.

The channel also cited purported investigative inputs, claiming that an individual named Imran, who's allegedly linked to Malaysia, had surfaced in WhatsApp chats and was suspected of pressuring employees to embrace Islam through inflammatory speeches. It was further alleged that Khan was part of this WhatsApp group, and that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was attempting to recover deleted chat logs.

Aaj Tak additionally reported that police had indicated that “HR executive” Nida Khan was the primary instigator behind the alleged “brainwashing”, and that the SIT was examining whether she followed any specific pattern in recruiting Muslim employees. However, when Alt News spoke to a Nashik police official, it was confirmed that Tata Consultancy Services had, at the outset, informed investigators that Khan was not an HR manager.

In another video report, Aaj Tak accused Nida Khan of “aiding and abetting the other accused individuals in the sexual exploitation of a female employee”, and further claimed that provisions of the Atrocities Act had been invoked against her. The allegation that she was involved in “brainwashing” employees was also repeated.

    CNN News 18

A segment by Rahul Shivshankar on CNN-News18 featured an image of Red Fort blast accused Shahid Shahid alongside Nida Khan, in an apparent attempt to draw a visual association between the two. Describing the TCS case as “organised Hindumisia”, Shivshankar claimed that investigators were tracking a “Malaysia plot”, citing a trail of alleged digital evidence, passport processes and supposed external handlers pointing to a coordinated effort to move victims out of India after sustained exploitation.

He then drew parallels with the film The Kerala Story, invoking narratives of coercion, conversion, and so-called “ISIS brides” in Kerala, and remarked, “So it is a geography where viewers there are radicals.”

    — News18 (@CNNnews18) April 15, 2026

Turning to Nida Khan, Shivshankar repeated several claims similar to those aired by other channels, describing her as an “HR manager” at the centre of the case who allegedly enabled misconduct. He claimed she ignored harassment and conversion complaints, “normalised” such behaviour, and provided institutional cover, alleging that she advised victims to “stay cool” and treat such conduct as part of “MNC culture”. He further alleged that she attempted to suppress complaints and shield the accused.

The segment concluded with a broader warning about an alleged “pattern”, describing highly educated professionals within reputed institutions as using their positions, access, and digital networks to control, coerce, convert, and radicalise. Shivshankar termed this phenomenon “white-collar radicalisation”, extending the narrative beyond the immediate case.

    — News18 (@CNNnews18) April 14, 2026

During a segment, Ananya Gupta of CNN-News18, citing police sources, claimed that vulnerable women, particularly from financially distressed backgrounds, were “identified and targeted” through an internal HR and training network, echoing allegations earlier made by Anjana Om Kashyap of Aaj Tak. Gupta referred to an SIT probe while alleging that multiple complaints were ignored by Nida Khan and that victims were told to remain silent.

She then switched to a political framing, remarking on what she described as the “silence” of the “left-liberal ecosystem”.

Describing Khan as the “mastermind”, Gupta went on to outline an alleged modus operandi in detail. She claimed that Khan had identified targets through a WhatsApp group, befriended them, introduced them to another religion, and gradually coerced them into practising it. She also noted that Khan was absconding at the time. She made no mention of what could be source of these claims or allegations. The nine FIRs, Alt News can confirm, contain none of these.

While the FIRs do contain serious allegations — primarily of workplace sexual harassment and some instances of religiously insensitive remarks — the broader media coverage created the impression of a systematically coercive environment in which employees were pressured to adopt Islamic practices. It also amplified unsubstantiated claims of an organised effort by radicalised individuals aimed at targeting and indoctrinating employees and even gang rape.
