During India's match against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy, a picture of Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami drinking an energy drink went viral on social media, garnering a variety of reactions. The issue gained momentum as the incident occurred during Ramadan when Muslims observe a fast and go without food and water for the entire day. Many viewers praised Mohammad Shami and said that he fulfilled his duty towards the country going beyond religion, while some others also criticized him and accused the fast bowler of not keeping the fast for Ramadan.

All India Muslim Jamaat president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, who has a history of issuing controversial and bizarre statements, slammed Shami for not observing the fast. He called it a crime and sin under Islamic law.
Many others, including Islamic experts, spoke out in defense of Mohammad Shami and stated that since he was on the cricket field and playing regular matches, he was not in a position to observe fasts, and in such a situation Islam allows him to do so, and he can complete it later. This includes Jamiat Dawat ul Muslimeen patron and Deobandi Ulema Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora, as well as All India Muslim Personal Law Board executive member Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali.
After this incident, a video of cricketer Mohammed Shami went viral on Instagram. It was uploaded by an Instagram account named prodhani__creations. In this video, he can be heard explaining why he drank an energy drink on the day of the match, "I broke my fast that day. I was forced to break my fast, otherwise those people would have ruined my career. I apologize to Muslim brothers and sisters." This video has more than 2 crore views. The caption of the video states that Mohammed Shami revealed the reason he broke his fast for Ramadan and apologized for it.
Fact Check
We took a closer look at the viral video, and observed that the audio in the clip was not synced with Mohammed Shami's video. When we performed a reverse image search of the frames of this video, we found the original video uploaded on the sports channel 'News18 Sports Next' on April 12, 2024. In this video, Mohammed Shami was wishing people 'Eid Mubarak' on behalf of himself and his family. In other words, the viral footage of Mohammed Shami in which he was talking about being forced to break the fast is a doctored video in which a different audio has been added.
When we examined the content posted by the Instagram handle named prodhani__creations, we came across a number of edited videos featuring Indian cricketers Mohammad Shiraz, Umran Malik, Yusuf Pathan, Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan, and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar taking aim at Mohammed Shami, each with millions of views.

To sum up, an old video of Mohammed Shami was tampered with and a fake audio clip was added to it to make it appear that he admitted to being forced to break the Ramadan fast.
