A 17 second long video is viral on social media platforms, showing a woman wearing a head mask, dancing and grooving while sitting on the shoulder of a man amidst a huge crowd also dancing around her with loud music playing in the background. A man from behind removes her mask from behind, and the men around her appear to be touching her inappropriately.
Several social media users shared this video with the claim that this scene unfolded at the CJP protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar, adding that the protest, which was initiated for the students' justice has now lost its purpose and has become a platform for merrymaking and partying.
An X user named Vinay Pandit shared the clip on July 26, with the caption, (translated from Hindi) "Delhi: Squandering her own honor at Jantar Mantar and talking about paper leaks? Was she not ashamed before when the mask was removed from her face?" (Archive)
The post, not only questioning the woman's character, also questions the purpose and "decency" of the protest, has garnered 84,600 views and was shared over 277 times.
Vishnu Rajput, leader of the far-Right group Rajput Karni Sena, posted the same video on Instagram on July 26. The video, receiving 10,000 likes, amplified Pandit's claims on the protest.
The overlay caption of the post, translated from Hindi, reads: If she is a student in reality, it is a matter of thought whether the aim of education is to spread knowledge and help in character building, or giving inappropriate slogans. Everyone has the right to protest, but maintaining the dignity of language and attitude is also necessary. I pray to god that all the young boys and girls get inspired for upholding good moral values, conscience and honorable self expression.
Alt News received requests on its WhatsApp helpline to verify the authenticity of the clip.
Fact Check
In order to investigate the authenticity of the video, we ran a reverse image search on few of the key frames of the viral clip, which led us to the original video posted on July 5.
The video was uploaded on an Instagram page called 'tunseaevents'. Although, it was not clear where this video is from, the caption of the video is related to the 2026 FIFA Men's Football World Cup.
Taking this into account, a deeper search led to us to the same video posted by an Instagram page 'flowmexicanoofficial' on June 27. The caption written in Spanish, translates to: "Heyyyy, like when they reveal your secret identity!"
Then, we came across another post containing the same video, uploaded on June 30 by an You Tube account named @entertainingfox5006. Here, the location of the video was clearly given as Mexico and the hashtags of the video also highlight Mexico, World Cup 2026 and CDMX, which stands for stands for Ciudad de Mexico or Mexico City — the capital and the largest metropolis of Mexico.
After ascertaining the location of the video as Mexico, a more thorough search revealed the context of the video — Mexico won their final group stage game against Czechia on June 25, 2026. As this was Mexico's last group stage match, and following this victory, the national team went into the knockouts, the entire nation erupted in celebrations which continued well into the next month, as Mexico won over Ecuador in the Round of 32, on July 1, ending their knockout victory drought of 40 years.
The chronology of the uploaded videos, thus, suggested that the viral video was captured during one such celebrations, and was amplified various times through various social media accounts, all reflecting the jubilant mood in Mexico.
The mask worn by the woman in the viral video is called the Luchador Mask, which has deep cultural significance in Mexico.
To sum up, the viral video being circulated on social media platfroms by Indian accounts is actually from a celebration related to the World Cup in Mexico, and not from the protest site in Delhi. The claims around the protest losing its purpose and questions around its decency are therefore baseless and misleading.
